Altaeros: An Airborne Wind Turbine

Picture
What?
A balloon-like shroud holds a turbine that can generate electricity up to 2000 feet in the air.
Why?
Winds at high altitude are stronger and more consistent, and this portable platform can generate electricity at remote locations. This renewable energy solution replaces expensive, inefficient diesel solutions.
How?
A conductive tether and power electronics send power down to the ground from the airborne wind turbine. I worked on the generator selection, cable analysis, and power electronics architecture design for the next prototype of the airborne wind turbine.
